Off with the Beer fridge!

Off with the beer fridge and save some money.

We often come across the old fridge in the garage being used as a beer fridge.  And that’s a good use of an old fridge, especially if it still works well and keeps the drinks cold.

But what if it’s causing 1/2 your energy bill?  I came across a home the other week during an energy audit and found that 1 fridge in the garage was the cause of over 1/2 the energy bill for the whole house!  And it wasn’t the first time I’ve seen it.

So this is just a little heads up – if you have an old refrigerator in the garage you can put a power meter on it and check how much energy it’s using.  If it’s really old it could be using as much as 11 kWh a day.  Given the average household usage is 16 kWh per day in Melbourne, that’s a big part of the bill.

If this is your beer fridge here’s you can simply turn it off when you don’ t need it and just turn it on for those big family functions or BBQ’s.  If it needs to be on all the time because you have a big family and need the extra fridge room, it could be well worth replacing it with a highly efficient model.

Worth giving some thought with power prices going up all the time and our fridges are on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
